Good day all. It's Wednesday and I have another Random Wednesday post for you.
Today's subject… body modifications. The art and tradition of body modifications goes back thousands of years, since the dawn of man. I'm not trying to get all philosophical or quote any facts here. I just want to share my own thoughts and experiences.
Even today I believe this subject is a little taboo for some. Some employers don't allow visible tattoos and "excessive" body modifications and they have legitimate reasons for these requirements, yet this doesn't stop people from continuing this practice.
My employer requires that all tattoos be covered by clothing "when possible." I am glad they have this condition or I might find myself out of a job. Believe me, I am no tattoo aficionado, but I do have a few and some are quite visible and cannot be covered with clothing (except by gloves and scarves).
Just like a lot of other young people, I had to get a tattoo, then another, and another, until I ended up with several. Now that I'm older, I think the tattoo itch is leaving me. It just doesn't have the same appeal to me anymore. Are my days of body modifications finally behind me? Nope. I've discovered the world of piercings.
I've had my ears pierced since I was a baby and most people might not consider that a body modification
… but it is. When I was a teenager I had my upper lobe and helix pierced (see diagram), but I let them close. A few weeks ago I decided it was time that I get another piercing. Twenty-year-old me would have just jumped right into it, but now that I'm an much older, I find that I have to research everything extensively prior to committing. I finally found the best body piercing studio in my city (according to their reviews and testimonials) and I booked an appointment for an Industrial and a Rook piercing, only to have my hopes shattered by the piercing expert. Apparently the shape of my ears aren't conducive for proper healing and alignment of an Industrial piercings. So I went for the Rook and Helix instead.
I am very pleased with my results and I will definitely be going back to that same studio to get my jewelry replaced after I've healed and I also want to get a Daith and Conch piercing in my other ear. Will I ever venture into any other piercings or body modifications? Hmmm, probably not. Right now I'm content with ears.

Apart from the usual earlobe piercing, I also have two added above them in my left ear.
My snakebite is something that I haven’t been able to say goodbye to either. I’ve had them since I was 18, now – 7 years later [I only realize now how long I have them already, haha!] – I still can’t see to take them out. They’re a part of me and every time I have to go without them, my face looks so weird; empty. Definitely not ready to take that step yet, so much is obvious.
When it comes to tattoos, I’m ridiculously happy that I work in the back-office of a company. Nobody can tell me I should keep them covered since customers never see me anyways and my colleagues don’t have a problem with it either.
The itch for tattoos hasn’t left me yet, but I’m still very conscious about only getting tattoos with a meaning – something that I know I’ll want forever, that’s a part of me already but just shown on my skin as well.

Thanks for sharing, Kathy. I know what you mean about only getting tattoos that have meaning. They will forever be a part of us and I don’t want to be an old lady with with paw prints on my thighs (no offense if that’s one of your tattoos lol) 😁

And indeed. Haha, no paws on my body. Don’t think I’ll ever get those either even though I remember considering it once as a memorial to my dog when he passed away. But then I felt like I should take an extra paw for every other pet I lost and there are loads of those.. Don’t feel quite comfortable with being full of paws, haha!
